Bungee jumping is an exhilarating adventure sport where participants leap from a height while connected to a long elastic cord. The jumper experiences a free fall before the cord recoils, propelling them upwards and creating a bouncing motion. This thrilling activity offers an adrenaline rush and a unique perspective of the surroundings.
The roots of bungy jumping can be traced back to the 'land divers' of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, who performed ritualistic jumps using vines tied to their ankles. This ancient practice was a test of courage and faith, often culminating in celebrations of successful jumps. Fast forward to modern times, and the concept was reborn in the 1970s when a group of New Zealanders, inspired by the land divers, decided to take a daring leap off the Kawarau Bridge. This marked the birth of commercial bungy jumping as we know it today.
The minimum age required for bungy jumping is 12 years, and the maximum is 45 years. The minimum weight is 40 kg, and the maximum is 110 kg.
Before the jump, participants are briefed on safety procedures and fitted with harnesses and ankle attachments. Safety checks are conducted to ensure all equipment is secure and functioning properly. Participants ascend to the bungee jumping platform, which is often located on a tall structure such as a bridge, tower, or purpose-built platform. The platform provides a clear space for jumping and a secure attachment point for the bungee cord.
Upon reaching the platform, participants are secured to the bungee cord with a full-body harness. They stand on the edge of the platform, ready to leap into the void below. With a final countdown or encouragement from the instructors, participants take a leap of faith and dive headfirst off the platform. The bungee cord stretches to absorb the energy of the fall, allowing the jumper to experience a free-fall sensation.
As the bungee cord reaches its maximum extension, it recoils and begins to pull the jumper back upward. This creates a bouncing motion as the jumper alternately falls and rises. Once the bouncing motion subsides, the jumper is lowered to the ground or a waiting platform using a secondary rope system. Trained staff assist with the removal of harnesses and ensure a safe return to solid ground.
Bungee jumping locations vary, with some offering jumps from bridges, cranes, or natural features such as cliffs. Safety is paramount in bungee jumping, and operators adhere to strict protocols to ensure the well-being of participants. Before attempting a jump, participants are typically required to sign liability waivers and may need to meet certain health and weight restrictions.
Overall, bungee jumping offers a thrilling and unforgettable experience for adrenaline enthusiasts seeking an adventure unlike any other.
Bungy Standards
We follow the Australian and New Zealand Standards Authority Guidelines for commercial operations in bungy jumping, and these standards have now been incorporated to form the Indian Standards, which did not exist before:
With regards to safety, there were obviously no official regulations in place since Bungy had never been practiced on a formal scale before, and Jumpin Heights, based on the New Zealand safety standards, went on to formalize the regulations, which are now taken to be the official safety standards for Bungy jumping in India.
