Activities
Gaumukh is a peak situated in Uttarakhand, India. The name ‘Gaumukh’ is derived from Sanskrit word Gaumukha meaning ‘cow mouth’ and it does resemble that shape. Gaumukh Tapovan trek passes through Nanda Devi National Park and is known as one of toughest treks in India because of its difficult terrain, high altitudes and unpredictable weather conditions. On your way to Gaumukh you will pass through beautiful villages, forests and snow-capped mountains. This trek gives you an opportunity to explore Himalayas at close quarters with stunning views of snow-clad peaks like Nanda Ghunti (6,816 m), Trisul (7120 m), Panchchuli (7120 m) and many more. You can also visit Ralamandir which is a cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. This trek is not for everyone and requires some experience before attempting it. However, if you are looking for adventure then there is no better place than Gaumukh Tapovan. We have listed down some important things to remember before embarking on your journey to Gaumukh. So read on! The trek to Gaumukh base camp can be done anytime of year, but it is best to start in May to July when most of the snow has melted. August through September are also great months for a Gaumukh Tapovan trek because you will still have some trail access and views of Mt. Kailash, but it will not be as crowded with tourists. There are many wonderful things to see in Uttarakhand and its national parks, but few places in India can match Gaumukh-Tapovan for dramatic landscapes and powerful imagery. This place is known as one of India’s most idyllic pilgrimage spots and also one of its most beautiful natural areas. The trek to Gaumukh involves climbing a glacier – so it’s no walk in the park!
