Overview

Brahmatal Trek is one of the best winter trek in Uttrakhand. In December with the absolutely perfect Brahmatal weather shall prove to be one of the most thrilling trekking adventures. Brahmatal Lake is situated in the depths of the Himalayan regions and is a magical sight to discover. In all its grandeur, Brahmatal is one of those few trekking destinations which are well suited for a trek in the winter months of December, January, February, and March. It is not too difficult to reach the Brahmatal trek which is what makes it a fairly favorable trek for less experienced trekkers or beginners. Brahmatal Trek in winters is carried out amidst deep snow-laden trails. The most exciting part is that snow-fall is frequent which simply makes the entire trekking experience magical. Since the snow is usually freshly fallen, it is soft and perfect for our snow-ball fights. Thus, this trek turns a lot of our dreams of experiencing fun snow-ball fights, camping under the stars, camping next to lakes, trekking amidst picturesque scenic beauty; amongst others, shape themselves into reality. It is full of adventurous trails and challenges. On our way, we shall walk through forests of Rhododendrons, Oaks, and Fir trees. The colossal Himalayan peaks stand out brilliantly against the clear blue skies. The lakeside camping at Bekaltal is one of the many highlights of the Brahmatal Trek. The sight of the gigantic Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti on such a low lying trek is rare and thus, turns out to be another beautiful aspect of the Brahmatal Trek. Temperature here is suitable for winters and quite convenient in fact, for a winter trek. Brahmatal Lake is such magnificent beauty amidst its natural habitat, that we shall be astounded by the sheer splendor it exudes. It remains frozen in winter and it is a sight to behold. The entire trek experience is worth remembering for a lifetime. Brahmatal Trek in winter is one the best winter trek choices you shall make. The Brahmatal Lake And Betal lake lies completely frozen in winter. It is a delight for shutterbugs. The entire trek is full of panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges and Garhwal snow-line. Some of the most well-known peaks that stand brilliantly across the sky and are visible on Brahmatal trek are Trishul, Nandaghunti, Chowkhamba, Nilkanth, Kamet, Hathi, and Ghoda peaks. Brahmatal Trek at such a low range is one of the rare sights from where these gigantic ranges are visible. The Brahmatal temperature in winter is pretty cold but suits trekking.In the daytime,  temperature in brahmatal ranges between 0°C to 2°C. In the night, the temperatures fall to around -5°C to -10°C. But it is still slightly better in the tents. The Brahmatal Trek is also traversed in summers. In the daytime, Brahmatal weather remains cool and pleasant. Brahmatal trek temperatures vary depending on the altitude that you are at, during the trek. In camps at a lower altitude, the Brahmatal trek weather is pleasant at around 10°C. At the higher camps, the Brahmatal trek temperatures can be around 2°C.

 What is the  Brahmatal Lake Trek?

Brahmatal Lake is located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, The lake is 3718 m above sea level. There is a big camping ground near the lake. The lake has religious significance and needs to be respected according to local traditions. As per the locals, Brahmatal lake is where lord Brahma meditated according to the local people and mythology and another lake you will come across is Bekhaltal it is where Lord Brahma remains hidden. It is a winter trek which is famous for an alpine medium size lake at 3240 m/10630 ft.  The trek starts from Lohajung and measures around 25 Km, to and fro. The lake remains frozen and often filled with snow during winters. The trek trail is very beautiful and exciting with the peaks among which Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Mrigthuni, Chaukhamba, Nilkantha, Hati Ghoda are notable. Most of the portion of this trail is full with thick forest cover of Rhododendrons. In summer and post monsoon alpine meadows on this area remains rich in green. Intermitted rains make the beautiful weather here. As a winter trek, Brahmatal becomes a India’s Popular trekking destination. According to the Indian Mythology, Goddess Parvati (Lord Shiva’s Wife) killed the demon Lohasur where the lohajung village is built, that’s why the village called Lohajung.

How is the weather in Brahmatal Lake?

The temperature during the daytime is around 0°C to 5°C. Late night/early morning temperatures at Lohajung, Bekal Tal and Brahma Tal can be around 0° to 2°C, 0°C to -2°C and -5°C to -10° C. In the tent the temperature will be 10°C (app.) warmer but still can be freezing.

 What is the best time to visit Brahmatal Lake Trek?

The best season to explore Brahmatal is either winter: December to March or in the springs:  April to June and in the autumn: October to November. In winters, weather normally remains clear and panoramic beauty of the surrounding is unmatched. Adequate amount of snow is another reason that this is getting popular in recent years.  

Is Brahmatal Lake trek good in Summers?

During summer the weather at Brahmatal trek remains pleasant during the day but it gets colder at night and temperature will rise as you will climb higher. Night /early morning temperature can be from 10 degrees Celsius to 2 degrees Celsius.

How is the Brahmatal Lake in Monsoon?

From July monsoon arrives so Brahmatal trekking in this season can be very dangerous as there are chances of land sliding.

How to reach Brahmatal Lake?

You can come through different modes of transport. Here we mentioned the details:-

By plane

The nearest airport to Brahmatal lake is Pantnagar domestic airport which is 32 km from Kathgodam. This airport is connected directly with Delhi by 4 round flights per week.

By train

The nearest station to Brahmatal lake is Kathgodam railway station. It has good connectivity to many places and these include Lucknow, Delhi, Dehradun and Howrah.

By bus

There is a motorable road all the way till Kathgodam (basecamp for this trek). You have to trek from Kathgodam to reach Brahmatal which is at 12 km distance. For reaching Lohajung by bus we have two options. First option is that we can start our journey from Delhi. Regular buses starts from 1 Swami Vivekanad Inter State bus terminal , popularly known as Anand Vihar ISBT Delhi, to Kathgodam/Rishikesh/Dehradun. Buses that go to Nainital stops at Haldwani which is a twin town of Kathgodham (8 hr journey). Usually, buses drop you at the Haldwani bus station. From there you have to come to Kathgodham Railway Station which is 4 km away. Tata Sumo or similar vehicles will pick up you from Kathgodham Railway Station. Second option is that you can start your bus journey from Rishikesh (yoga capital of India). You will get a direct bus from the Rishikesh early in the morning. The bus will depart from Rishikesh at sharp 5AM.

Day 1 - Rishikesh to Lohajung (Drive : 225 km, Duration: 9-10 Hrs, Altitude: 7,600 ft)

Drive to Lohajung which takes about 9-10 hours from Rishikesh with stunning views of high-altitude peaks like Trishul, Maiktoli, Nanda Devi, Ghori Parvat, Nanda Khat, Hathi Parvat, and Ghori Parvat. Take a small halt at Kausani for refreshments and make some memories with your camera as the views here are absolutely unforgettable. Lohajung serves as the beginning point and the base camp for the Brahmatal trek. After reaching Lohajung, the stay will be in Guest house / Camp / Homestay on a sharing basis. There are many local shops where you can buy jackets, hand gloves, caps, shoes, etc. if required. However, it is advised that you carry all the required things for trek beforehand and not rely on any shop.

Day 2 - Lohajung to Bekaltal (Trek: 8 km, Duration: 4-5 Hrs, Altitude: 9,689 ft)

First day of the trek starts from Lohajung to Bekaltal which takes about 4-5 hours. Get up early in the morning, have breakfast and get ready to begin. Just beside Lohajung follow the ascending human-made stone trek. Along the way, you would encounter some startling views of the Nanda Ghunti Peak. The walk is mostly inside the jungle of the conifer, Cedar, Oak and Fir. Spot the Kali valley as you climb higher and it is marked by the union of Kali and Pindari rivers. Amidst thick oak forests, the lake gleams peacefully in summer, while inwinter, it is frozen, and the trail would be pretty matte. Stay at Bekaltal will be organized in tents.

Day 3 - Bekaltal to Brahmatal Lake (Trek: 7 km, Duration: 5-6 Hrs, Altitude: 10,440 ft)

Today is the day to trek to Brahmatal Lake. It takes about 5-6 hours to reach Brahmatal from Bekaltal Campsite. The trail starts steeply into the Oak and Rhododendron Forest which leads to the meadow of Telandi top. In the winter, you will see the meadow of Telandi turns into a vast snowfield and crossing the area, a gala of thrill. From here, it is a very gradual descent to Brahmatal. Enjoy some scintillating views of the mighty Himalayas from here and then proceed further to Brahmatal or Khabekhal Lake to be precise. After a great day, spend the night in camp.

Day 4 - Brahmatal Lake to Khamila Top (Trek: 6.4 km, Duration: 5 Hrs, Altitude: 12,198 ft)

Today is the most visually mesmerizing day of the entire Brahmatal trek. Get up comfortably by 7:00 AM, have breakfast and get ready to climb to the top of Brahmatal. The trek to the top of Brahmatal requires around two and a half hours of steep climb. Along the way, it would be all ascents. We would pass through some treacherous trails at Chota Jhandidar and Bada Jhandidar. The trail goes through a mountain ridge with valleys on both sides and provides majestic views of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti. At the top, you would see a 180° view of exclusive snow-covered Himalayan Ranges. Mountains such as Chaukhambha, Mandi, Mana, Nilgiri, Neelkanth, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, Maiktoli become visible. This part of the trail is completely different from the entire trek. Return to Brahmatal campsite.

Day 5 - Brahmatal Lake to Lohajung (Trek: 8.9 km, Duration: 7-8Hrs, Altitude: 7,600 ft)

Today you would be leaving this pristine lap of Mother Nature. After having breakfast, start walking to Lohajung from Brahmatal followed by some steep descending trail. It takes around 6-7 hours to trek down to Lohajung through thick oak and rhododendron forests once again. We will reach Lohajung in the afternoon. This day could be used to rest as well as playing cricket, Volleyball or any other outdoor games at our Maujkaro Camps and at the end of the day, we can explore the small town and hear the mythological stories by the locals and immerse in their culture. Stay in the Maujkaro Camps.

Day 6 - Drive back from Lohajung to Rishkesh (Drive: 225 km, Duration: 9-10 Hrs)

Depart from Lohajung early in the morning, preferably before 06:30 AM since the journey takes 10-11 hours. Expected to reach Rishikesh by 10:00 PM.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellation on or within 15 days (0 days to 14 days) of departure – 100% charge as a cancellation fee
  • Cancellation on or before 15 days of departure – 50% charge as a cancellation fee
  • In case of unforeseen weather conditions, natural disasters or government restrictions, certain activities/whole trek may be cancelled and in such cases the operator will try his best to provide an alternate feasible activity. However, no refund will be provided for the same.
  • No refund will be processed in case of trek cancelled by trekker due to personal/medical emergency
  • If package includes any product offering (e.g., Jacket or Bag), that will not be returned, and price of the product will not be refunded. For example, if booking amount collected Rs. 2000 and the package includes jacket offer worth Rs.1500 then in case of cancellation, Jacket will not be returned and only Rs.500 (2000-1500) will be refunded subject to fulfill of other cancellation policy conditions.

Refund Policy

  • Any refund applicable will be processed within 14 business days.

Confirmation Policy

  • Upon booking, the trekker will receive a confirmation voucher via email, within 48 hours (on working days).
  • In the exceptional cases of slots not being available, viable alternatives will be provided to the customer, in regard to the customer’s preference. In such cases, a new voucher would be sent via email, consisting of the new trek details.
  • Alternatively, the trekker may choose to cancel their booking before confirmation and a full refund will be processed.
